What if the condition of our hearts determines how much of God's truth we actually receive? That is the provocative question at the heart of Luke 8:1-21, where Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower -- or more accurately, the Parable of the Four Soils. The seed in the story is the Word of God, and the four soils represent four different states of the human heart. Some hearts are hardened like a packed path, where truth never has a chance to take root. Others receive the gospel with initial excitement but have no depth to sustain them when life gets difficult. Still others welcome the message, only to let it be slowly strangled by the distractions, ambitions, and pleasures that crowd out spiritual growth. And then there is the good soil -- the heart that receives the Word, holds it fast, and bears fruit that impacts the lives of those around it. The remarkable thing is that Jesus does not leave us guessing about which soil we are. He invites us to honest self-reflection, and more importantly, he reminds us that the type of soil we are is not fixed. Hearts can change. Hard ground can be broken up. Thorny ground can be cleared. The God of second chances is always at work, and that is a truth worth holding onto.
